The Increasing Diversity in Environmental Careers (IDEC) program provides a multi-year, paid learning opportunity for underrepresented STEM college students – individuals who identity as woman, Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC), and/or disabled. Receive on-the-job training to learn natural resources management skills and put those skills into practice completing habitat restoration projects throughout the Midwest.

Serve alongside natural resource professionals in a Minnesota Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), learning hands-on skills in managing soil and water resources. Projects may include assisting with groundwater monitoring programs, wetland and watercourse inventories and assessments, field surveys, and educational programs.

Individual Placement members serve in a single placement setting at nonprofits, local government agencies, or higher education institutions. The four open seasonal positions include:

• Invasive Plant Management Specialist (St. Croix Falls, WI)
• Drill Core Library Inventory and Curation Specialist (Hibbing, MN)
• Archaeology & Heritage Program Specialist (Cass Lake, MN)
• Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist (St. Paul, MN)

The Intertribal Land Corps Crew will complete challenging and impactful conservation and service projects in partnership with the National Park Service. As an affinity-based crew, priority will be given to members of affiliated tribes or individuals who self-identify as Indigenous and want to gain experience in natural resource management.

Receive on the job training to learn natural resources management skills and put those skills into practice studying monarch butterfly breeding habitat. Habitat projects may include but are not limited to pollinator counts, milkweed stem counts, and maintaining and organizing field data.

Outdoor Skills Instructors provide basic camping instruction, paddling instruction, and environmental education for the I Can Paddle! and I Can Camp! programs. I Can Paddle! and I Can Camp! are part of several I Can! programs, sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). I Can! programs introduce Minnesota families to a variety of outdoor activities including camping, fishing, paddling, and biking.

Summer Youth Corps Youth Crew members will participate in a rigorous program of work, education and training and will complete environmental restoration projects. Projects may include trail construction and maintenance, foot bridge building, landscaping, campsite development and invasive plant removal.

Summer Youth Corps American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter/Crew Leaders motivate, direct and coordinate an American Sign Language (ASL) crew of young people in a rigorous program of work, education and training. The Interpreter/Crew Leader will be responsible for maintaining consistent discipline and fostering positive crew morale by utilizing teamwork among youth participants to complete natural resource projects. While serving alongside another AmeriCorps member, the crew leader will provide collaborative leadership for the crew, ensure safety procedures are followed and serve as the liaison with project partners.

Crew Leaders will be responsible for maintaining consistent discipline and fostering positive crew morale by utilizing teamwork among youth participants completing natural resource projects. While serving alongside another AmeriCorps member, the crew leader will provide collaborative leadership for the crew, ensure safety procedures are followed and serve as the liaison with project partners.

Outdoor Education AmeriCorps members grow personally and professionally during this hybrid program while gaining hands-on conservation skills in the field and receiving youth development training. The first part of the term is focused on natural resource and restoration projects while the second part of the year will be spent leading crews of Twin Cities youth participating in our Youth Outdoors program in environmental education, community service, and conservation projects after school and on Saturdays.

Veterans Corps AmeriCorps members participate in non-military national service together on public lands completing conservation projects and learning skills to leverage their military experience for civilian careers.

Lead crews in completing natural resource conservation projects such as exotic species management, herbicide application, stream bank stabilization and erosion control, timber stand improvement, prescribed burning, trail construction & maintenance, tree planting, basic carpentry, wild land fire suppression and emergency response in partnership with public land management agencies such as the DNR, USFWS, NPS, SWCDs, etc. Facilitatee training, education, coordination, and leadership to support a positive and safe experience for fellow AmeriCorps Crew Members.

Veterans Corps Field Crews serve outdoors restoring habitat, managing natural resources, and responding to natural disasters or community needs. In addition to these tasks, members will work with Veterans Corps program staff to attend sessions on transitioning to civilian life and connecting to veteran services and resources.

Outdoor Education Crew Members and Leaders operate a hybrid program with the first part of the year focused on natural resource and restoration projects in and around the Twin Cities metro area with other young adults. The second part of the year will be spent leading crews of Twin Cities’ youth participating in our Youth Outdoors program in environmental education, community service, and conservation projects after school and on Saturdays.

Climate Fellows take part in industry-level training while completing energy conservation projects in public buildings, gaining experience needed to be successful in a clean energy career. This is a community-based program with priority given to individuals residing in North Minneapolis. Individuals who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC), women and/or individuals with a disability who want to pursue a career in renewable energy/sustainability are encouraged to apply.

Individual Placement positions (ages 18-25) are based at various locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Under the direct guidance of a project supervisor at a partner agency, the Corpsmember will assist with a variety of projects to expand the capacity and reach of the partner agency. Projects may focus on water quality, invasive species management, outdoor recreation, land use planning, communications, and/or volunteer outreach

Complete natural resource service projects as well as provide training, education, coordination and leadership to ensure a positive and safe experience for regional AmeriCorps members. Primary responsibilities include: fostering AmeriCorps member development through experiential learning, providing technical skills training, monitoring field safety and conducting equipment maintenance.

 The Maajii-akii-gikenjigewin (Starting out in Earth Conservation) crew or the FDL Indigenous Conservation Corps (ICC) Crew completes challenging and impactful conservation and service projects throughout the Fond du Lac Reservation and within the 1837, 1842, and 1854 ceded territories. The FDL ICC crew will work with current FDL Resource Management professionals to gain valuable experience and skills, to prepare for future careers in the natural resources field.
