The Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940

Hurstville Interpretive Center, Jackson County

Thursday, November 10, 2016

Join the Dubuque, Jackson and Jones OWL group for a trip to the Osborne Conservation Center in Elkader for an intriguing presentation about the Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940 given by Clayton County Naturalist Abbey Harkrader. That year Armistice Day started as a warm and sunny morning that suddenly turned into a living hell to duck hunters, farmers, and others who tried to take advantage of the perfect weather that was about to become a winter nightmare. Following the presentation will be time to share personal stories and family accounts of this amazing and tragic storm of 1940. We’ll also tour the nature center’s indoor displays and outdoor space. Before the program, we’ll enjoy a “Dutch” meal at Fennelly’s Irish Pub in Elkader for lunch. Program is free. Lunch cost on your own. Lunch at 11:00 am. Program at 1:00 pm. Carpooling is available. The OWL group is for adults who are looking to meet new people and learn more about our environment. Pre-registration required.
