Flowers of the Prairie

Hurstville Interpretive Center, Jackson County

Saturday, June 24, 2017

Danuta Hutchins, of Storm Lake, will give a presentation on prairie wildflowers, their common English names and Linnaeus based classification in Latin. She'll inform when they blossom, where they grow, and what medicinal and food uses they served during the times of early pioneers and Native American Peoples.

Following the indoor presentation, we'll head outside to the prairie for a “hands-on” component of drawing/coloring images of prairie flowers.

Danuta is a retired professor and author of many papers and book chapters in her field and has written four books of general interest. Her early retirement enabled her to devote full time to her artwork, resulting in several successful group and solo exhibits of paintings, etchings, and sculpture.

Friends of Jackson County Conservation has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, for this presentation. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa's communities.
