Master River Stewards Program

JOHNSON COUNTY EDUCATION PROGRAMS, Johnson County

Tuesday, May 9, 2017

Dates: Tuesday nights 5:30-9:30 p.m., May 9th - June 27th

Summary: The Master River Stewards Program is an adult-education course that teaches about watershed science, river and stream dynamics, aquatic habitat, water quality and monitoring, land management strategies, water policy, stream restoration, and paddling in Iowa. The program was developed by Iowa Rivers Revival, an organization devoted to river awareness and conservation throughout the state. As the program has grown, educators across the state have been trained and are facilitating courses in multiple counties.

The goal of the Master River Steward Program is to build a network of river advocates and experts in organizations, agencies, and communities across the state to protect and improve Iowa’s rivers in order to ensure a lasting resource for future generations.

Instructors: Local experts will lead each session. These experts include professors, government agency professionals, scientists, and conservationists.

Students: No background experience is necessary. Any adult with a deep interest in learning about watershed issues is encouraged to sign up. Students should be committed to learning, able to keep up with readings, and committed to completing a follow-up watershed service project. Students will be required to attend each session in order to become a certified Master River Steward.

Cost: There is a $50 course fee. This fee covers the cost of a provided textbook and thumb drive filled with readings and resources.

Contact: Kristen Morrow (Johnson County Conservation Naturalist) at kmorrow@co.johnson.ia.us to register. Registration deadline is April 25th. Students will be accepted on a first-come basis, up to 20 students.
