Smoke Beyond the Water: Central Plains Tradition Pipes East of the Missouri River

Wickiup Hill Learning Center, Linn County

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Central Plains tradition earth lodges are present throughout the
state of Nebraska and in northern Kansas. These sites are also
present in Iowa within the Glenwood Locality, an approximate 30
sq. mile region located immediately east of the confluence of the
Platte and Missouri Rivers. The location of approx. 240 lodges are
known in this locality. Numerous archaeological investigations in
this locality have produced a large collection of smoking pipes,
many of which are housed at the Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist.
This collection includes a number of effigy forms, as well
as the more common obtuse-angle and elbow varieties. A review
of this collection offers insights into possible smoking rituals that
may have been performed. Pipe styles and methods of decoration
also provide information on possible interactions with groups
both within and outside of the Central Plains. Presenter Archaeologist
John Hedden, works for the Office of the State Archaeologist.
Cost: $2.50/adult, $1/child (16 and under) or $5/family
