Monarch Tagging 11:30 a.m. Session

Hitchcock Nature Center, Pottawattamie County

Saturday, September 10, 2016

How in the world do you tag a monarch butterfly? Find out at our annual Monarch Tagging program at Hitchcock Nature Center. Learn more about monarch butterflies, their unusual lifestyle and life cycle, and miraculous migration to Mexico as we show you how to catch and handle monarchs. Learn how to determine gender, and properly tag them in the wild and be a part of a national research project. All monarchs will be released after they are tagged.

Each family will receive an information packet with your own set of tags & attend a short training program before hitting the trails in search of monarch butterflies to tag.  You are welcome to bring your own butterfly net & we will have nets available for use.  We will have a limited number of butterfly nets for sale in our gift shop. Please dress for the weather & don't forget the insect repellent, sunblock, & water as much of this program will be outdoors.

There is no cost for this event, free will donations are accepted to support continued programming opportunities in Pottawattamie County. Pre-registration is required for this event by September 7th as space is limited.  Please pre-register for a spot in either our 9:30 a.m., 10:30a.m., or 11:30 a.m. session. All persons attending this event must be registered as space is very limited. Individuals who have not pre-registered may be admitted on the day of the event if space is available.
