Description: Full-time permanent position.  Non-exempt under FLSA.  Will be under the general supervision of the Director and immediate supervision of the Natural Resource Manager.  Hours are typically Monday through Friday 7:00 - 3:30 but may work non-standard work weeks that include nights, weekends and holidays or additional hours or a changeof hours with minimum notice as work conditions demand.  This position requires the unique blend of someone proficient in mechanical work (equipment and facilities) and a strong interest in natural resources.  Applicant must be proficient in construction, vehicle and farm equipment mechanics and building maintenance, be able to operate a variety of equipment and have a strong interest in natural resource management.  Applicant will be key in assisting with innovative strategies for natural resource management/establishment to include prairies, savannas and woodlands.  Employee is eligible for all county benefits which include: life, dental and health insurance; IPERS retirement plan; paid vacation, holidays and personal days; uniform allowance.

Duties:  Perform daily and routine maintenance on all motor powered equipment from trimmers to skidloaders.  Must be able to service all available equipment.  Will assist in prairie restoration and management, savanna management, timber stand improvement.  This will be accomplished with seasonal controlled burns, mechanical removal and herbicide application.  Will be involved in creating/maintaining trails.  Will assist in maintaining campground and rental cabins.  Will assist in native seed production, harvest, processing and planting.  Where applicable, assist with public educational programming.  Will develop nature center environmental education displays.

Requirements:  Must be able to effectively communicate and apply knowledge and common sense to solve problems and/or achieve work objectives.  Ability to stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, bend, balance and climb.  Must maintain a valid drivers license.  Must have both a CDL and herbicide/pesticide applicators license within 6 months of employment.  See educational requirements above.

 



Qualifications
Completion of a 4-yr degree in natural resource major (preferred). Individuals with a 2-year degree and experience is acceptable. Ideal candidate would have a strong mechanical aptitude and have a strong interest is natural resource management.
