Conservation Board Receives 50 acre Land Donation

Posted: 1/17/2012
Bremer / Bremer County Conservation Offices

Public land acreage in Bremer County has recently increased by 50 acres, but this land acquisition was not by the typical procedures of the past.  Much of the 3700+ acres managed by the Bremer County Conservation Board today has been obtained through purchase of the property, but this parcel of land was donated.  Without any financial transaction, the Conservation Board spend only $810 in abstract costs and legal fees to complete the acquisition.

Roach Farms, Inc. of Plainfield is the organization that made this generous donation.  This recently dissolved family business was involved with buying and selling real estate, insurance and appraisals, farming and farm management. They operated this business in Plainfield for over 100 years and donation of land for public use was their way of giving back to those they served.

The area will be named “Woods Pasture” as it was called when Roach Farms, Inc. managed the land.  The 50 acre parcel lies directly east of Plainfield and west of the Cedar River.  Part of the area is adjacent to the 228 acre North Cedar Park/North Cedar Wildlife Area complex and will be managed along with these two areas.  Activities allowed on this area will include hiking, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and other forms of outdoor recreation similar to other Bremer County natural areas.  No development on the area is planned, but improving wildlife habitat through native grass plantings and timber management will take place.

The Bremer County Conservation Board wishes to thank the families associated with Roach Farms, Inc. for this generous donation.  We hope that this area will provide many hours of recreational activities for both youth and adults for many years to come.  For more information on Woods Pasture or any Bremer County Conservation Board area, contact our office at 319-882-4742 or our website at www.mycountyparks.com/County/Bremer.aspx.
