The Hiker wildlife area is about 150 acres. This incredible gift came into our possession in 2007 and is still under construction. The area was willed to the Hardin County Conservation Board in 1994 by Arthur Hilker for the creation of wildlife habitat.
In the late fall of 2007, 90 acres of mixed prairie was planted into the corn stubble days before the first snowflakes touched the ground. The seed was from Carl Kurtz with some additional seed added from Swanson seed farm.
In the spring of 2008 the Greenbelt Pheasants Forever chapter donated funds to pay for the planting of two shelterbelts on the farm. Several different species of trees and shrubs were planted to add diversity and extra winter cover for wildlife.
The future plans are for constructing a 20 acre wetland with water control structures and nesting islands. This will be paid for out of a federal wetland initiative grant. The construction is due to take place in 2009.
This is going to be another great area for the public to enjoy all kinds of outdoor recreational activities and maybe to even used as a demonstration area for private landowners.
