OWLS: Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve Tour

Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve is a rare place that often makes people feel more like they’re in the southwestern United States than just south of Muscatine. Jointly owned by MidAmerican Energy and Monsanto, the preserve is open through tours only. Big Sand Mound has the highest concentration of endangered species in the state with more than 400 types of plants and undisturbed prairies and woodlands.

Enjoy a tour of this special and unique place! Participants should be prepared to walk up to 4 miles. Bring a sack lunch, water, sunscreen, and good hiking shoes.

This event is free and open to any interested adult. 

Carpooling is available from the Hurstville Interpretive Center and Central Park at 7:00 AM. OR meet at the Environmental Learning Center in Muscatine at 9:00 AM. 

7:00 AM Carpooling from Central Park & Hurstville Center
8-9 AM Optional self-guided tour at Environmental Learning Center
9:00 AM Meet at the Environmental Learning Center, 3300 Cedar Street Muscatine, Iowa; caravan to Big Mound
9:30 AM – 1:30 PM Tour Big Sand Mound Nature Preserve

OWLS (Older, Wiser, Livelier Souls) programs are coordinated between Dubuque, Jackson & Jones County Conservation Departments. All OWLS events are open to any ADULT interested in learning more about nature and the environment with other adults.
