Homeschool Series – Problem Solving

1st & 3rd Mondays of the Month – October 2024 to April 2025

Starting October 7, 2024 10:00-11:00 AM at the Hurstville Interpretive Center

To continue the Homeschool Science Series from the past two years, this year the focus will be Problem Solving. We will be discussing basic problem-solving techniques that are used in solving both math problems and problems in the real world. Example techniques range from basic "trial and error" or "guess and check" techniques to deductive and inductive reasoning, and various other techniques such as enumeration, or estimation and iteration.

The purpose is to help students develop ways of going about solving problems in general. The emphasis will be on understanding concepts and finding ways to simplify problem solving, not on number crunching. These techniques all apply just as easily to fifth grade math as they do to high school or college math, to logic puzzles, computer programming, real world business problems, or even to IQ tests.

The homeschool series will be led by Sue Gossman, and is geared for middle and high homeschool students.

Please register in advance by calling (563) 652-3783 or emailing Jess Wagner at jwagner@jacksoncounty.iowa.gov.

You can attend every date or sporadically; whatever works for your schedule. There is no specific theme for each class like in past years. Sue will share a variety of different problem-solving techniques and aspects from class to class. Some aspects will "stand alone," while other aspects will build on previous concepts somewhat.
