OWLS (Older Wiser Livelier Seniors) - The Cats of America: Ancient History and Modern Conservation

Looking for an excuse to get out of the house, make some new friends, enjoy a good meal and learn about the exciting world of nature? Then join us! These programs are held the first Tuesday of each month. The nature program will start at 11:00 a.m. at the Jester Park Lodge. An optional luncheon follows the program at noon in which pre-registration is required. Luncheon registration deadline November 29. The cost of the catered lunch (rosemary chicken, parsley potatoes, vegetable, salad, bread, and dessert) by The Radish is $10.

William R. Clark, Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Ecology at Iowa State University, will briefly discuss the evolution of cats including paleological history of sabertooth cats and cheetahs that once roamed North America. The talk transitions to the modern cat species including endangered species like ocelots, and common species like bobcats. The presentation will also include pumas that occasionally show up in Iowa. The program will also include conservation challenges including habitat loss, climate change, conflicts, and hunting.
