Buffalo National River Kayak Trip

Polk County Education Programs, Polk County

Monday, May 20, 2019

Join Polk County Conservation naturalists on this five day adventure to Arkansas. Established in 1972, Buffalo National River flows freely for 135 miles and is one of the few remaining undammed rivers in the lower 48 states. Once you arrive, prepare to journey from running rapids to quiet pools while surrounded by massive bluffs as you cruise through the Ozark Mountains. We will camp along the river and paddle three days.

  • Fee: $550; includes transportation (15 passenger van), lodging (double occupancy), meals (except while traveling), kayaking equipment, and camping fees.
  • Registration deadline is May 14
  • Departure from Jester Park at 7:00 a.m.
  • Minimum age is 21 and limited to 10 participants who must have prior paddling experience and be in good physical condition. Participants need to provide tent, sleeping bags, personal items, cash for souvenirs and meals while traveling.

**ALL registered individuals must attend and pass a mandatory paddling proficiency test prior to the trip unless you have tested within the last year. Tests will be available at Jester Park, Discovery Pond. Registered participants are responsible for contacting Lewis at lewis.major@polkcountyiowa.gov or 515-323-5361 to schedule a date/time, before May 3rd. Failure to do so will result in cancellation of the registration and the trip fee will be refunded.
