Monarch Tagging: 9:00 a.m. Session

Hitchcock Nature Center, Pottawattamie County

Saturday, September 16, 2017

How in the world do you tag a monarch butterfly? Find out at our annual Monarch Tagging program at Hitchcock Nature Center. Join us on Saturday, September 16th, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. for the first of our three, all-ages Monarch Tagging programs. Learn more about monarch butterflies, their unusual lifestyle and life cycle, and miraculous migration to Mexico as we teach you how to catch and handle monarchs. Learn how to determine gender, and properly tag them in the wild and be a part of a national research project. All monarchs will be released after they are tagged.

We will be hosting 3 sessions of this all-ages, family friendly program, at 9:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.. We begin with a short informational programming, then a tagging demonstration. After the demonstration you are able to search throughout the park in search of monarchs on your own. In addition to this all-ages program we will also be offering one session of our brand new "Children's Monarch Tagging" which is geared specifically toward families with children age 6 & under.  For more information on this brand new event please return to our programming list and view the entry for "Children's Monarch Tagging". Families with children under 6 are not required to attend the Children's Monarch tagging and are welcome to attend our regular all-ages event if they prefer.

Each family will receive an information packet with your own set of tags & attend a short training program before hitting the trails in search of monarch butterflies to tag. You are welcome to bring your own butterfly net & we will have nets available for use. We will also have a limited number of butterfly nets available for purchase in the gift shop. Please dress for the weather & don't forget the insect repellent, sunblock, & water as much of this program is outdoors.
