The Art of Conservation: A Visit With Ding Darling

Pottawattamie County Conservation has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to host "The Art of Conservation: A Visit with Ding Darling" at Hitchcock Nature Center on Friday, May 18th at 7:00 p.m. A cultural resource for Iowan's since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa's communities. 

Join us as history comes alive at Hitchcock Nature Center in this 45-minute presentation, Jay N. "Ding" Darling visits with the audience, as an old friend, in his 11th office a the Des Moines Register. Beginning with his early years in Sioux City he recalls his remarkable life. His story includes two Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoons for the Register and a remarkable career as a nationally known conservationist. 

This program is being presented as part of our adult educational programming, we request that all participants be age 14 & over. Pre-registration is required for this event as space is limited. Participants must purchase a $3.00 per vehicle daily entrance pass or have a Pottawattamie Conservation Foundation membership to attend this program. Daily entrance passes may be purchased with exact change or check at the front gate and may be purchased the day of the event. Annual memberships start at $20.00 per year and may be purchased from staff at any of our parks, at the front gate, or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center during regular business hours. Memberships may also be purchased online in advance at www.pottawattamieconservationfoundation.com. There is no additional fee to attend this program, free will donations are encouraged and will support continued programming opportunities in Pottawattamie County. 

About the Performer:

Tom Milligan has spent 45 years as a working theater artist in Iowa. As an actor, director, scenic designer as well as producer his work has been seen throughout Iowa and the Midwest. Beginning in 1973, many remember his work at Iowa's first dinner theater, Charlies Showplace, in Des Moines. Over the years he has been on staff at The Des Moines Playhouse, The Ingersoll Dinner Theater, The Drake Opera, Hoyt Sherman Theater, The Drama Workshop and many other venues in the Des Moines area. In 2005 he moved to the Amana Colonies, working on multiple productions at The Old Creamery Theater, The Iowa Theater Artists Company, as well as many self-produced productions. His 16 year association with humanities Iowa reflects his passion for both theater and history through his unique one man play presentations. 

This program is part of the Democracy and the Informed Citizen Initiative, administered by the Federation of State Humanities Councils. The initiative seeks to deepen the public's knowledge and appreciation of the vital connections between democracy, the humanities, journalism, and an informed citizenry.
