McFarland Park, Story County

THIS TRIP HAS BEEN CANCELED.

Join Story County Conservation naturalists on an inspiring seven-day backpacking adventure to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park!

This trip is for youth completing grades 9 through 12 in spring 2020. Campers will spend three nights back-country camping in 60,000 acres of true Midwest wilderness on the shores of Lake Superior.  Surround yourself with towering virgin timber, secluded lakes, and countless waterfalls. Explore the "Porkies" of Michigan with over 100 miles of trails and discover your inner wild. Once we leave the back country, the adventure continues with a Lake Superior cave exploration on kayaks. Challenge your mind, body, and spirit and make it a summer to remember!

How do you earn a spot? Download and complete the FLOAT  V 2020 application found at the bottom of this page, and deliver it with payment to McFarland Park by 4 pm Monday, May 18. If selected, you will begin your journey with a training day from 9 am-4 pm on June 19 at McFarland Park. At training, you will get a glimpse of back country camping: practice hiking with a loaded pack, learn to use the gear, and find out how to prepare for the adventure. Backpacking is a very physical activity, so you will want to be in decent shape before we leave.  .

Space is limited! Immerse yourself in wildness. This is an adventure to top them all!!

Participants must submit an application and pay registration fee before May 18th at McFarland Park Conservation Center. We can only take 10 campers on the trip. Individuals who express the greatest desire and need to attend this year’s camp, along with the person(s) we feel will benefit the most from this experience will be chosen.  If you are not selected this year, you may (and are encouraged to) apply next year.  Selected applicants payments are non-refundable!  Scholarships are available through the Iowa Association of Naturalists: https://www.iowanaturalists.org/programs/funding.

Participants will be responsible for meals on the road, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, water bottles, rain gear, and clothing. Once participants are selected they will receive a detailed list of supplies that they are expected to bring and an itinerary.

Equipment provided: Tents, packs, food, stoves/fuel, water filters, bear bags, cook wear, mess kits, tarps, and other needed gear.
