DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=BASE64:
Ed Kempf was introduced to photography by a college roommate in 1969. Ed was a Junior in college at that point and soon owned his own single lens reflex camera, a Ricoh TLS401. In those days they shot slides and film. They soon learned to use the cameras internal light meters. Ed spent about a decade returning to Cedar Rapids and traveling a great deal. In about 1977 Ed was taking lots of photos and he took a Kirkwood film developing class. Ed and a friend from the class bought large format cameras that shot negatives that were 6 x 4.5 cm. At this point Ed was ready to return to college so he registered at Hawkeye Tech, which had a pretty renowned photography department. Ed found a lab to process film and made proof sheets and launched his business with his wife, Impact Photo / Joe Photo in 1977. He was so busy with work that he dropped the registration.
\n
In the early 2000’s they took a vacation to Tampa Bay and instead of staying on the beach, they stayed on a small bay on the fourth floor. Ed had a Nikon camera with a zoom lens and would photograph birds while on the patio for coffee. This started Ed on a path of photographing birds. He purchased an 800 mm Nikon and now has a bird blind and is taking photographic birding vacations. Ed will cover one of these trips with photos from South Padre Island, where he visited one of the best birding areas in the nation. Join us for this installment of O.W.L.S.
\n
These O.W.L.S. programs are scheduled for Baby Boomers and older folks to interact with those of a similar maturity and are meant to keep us engaged mentally and physically in the world around us. We hope you can join in! Free but please pre-register to save a spot.
