Description

The Montgomery County Conservation Board is now accepting applications for one (1) Director Position.  This full-time employee will be working 40+ hours/week.  Applicants are required to be intelligent, energetic, highly motivated, and possess strong leadership traits.  The MCCB Director works for and reports to the five (5) Montgomery County Conservation Board Members and is required to follow detailed directions in order to perform high-quality work until objective completion. 

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

 

  • Coordinating, directing, and organizing the human, physical and financial resources of the department to efficiently and effectively accomplish the maintenance, improvement and development of county park and conservation areas and educational programs
  • Be on call 24 hours per day to handle or consult on any/all MCCB issues or concerns
  • Supervise management staff and exercise responsibility for all department employees
  • Responsible for hiring and discipline of all department employees
  • Review and document employee performance in relation to goals and expectations
  • Oversee enforcement of park rules, state and local laws and ordinances
  • Communicate effectively and tactfully with public, both individually and in groups
  • Develop, recommend, and manage annual department budgets in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Develop long range plans and make recommendations concerning acquisitions and purchases, developments, renovations, additions, and improvements
  • Write, coordinate, and administer grants and supplemental funds to assist department programs, events, and projects. 
  • Maintain effective working relationships with staff; other county departments; local, state, and federal agencies; and private organizations
  • Research and prepare a variety of reports including monthly and annual report of department activities and expenditures
  • Verify and approve all department payrolls, claims, and expenditures
  • Prepare the agenda for each Board meeting and assist the Chairman in the functions of the meeting
  • Maintain certifications and keep current on trends and development in areas of responsibility

 

 

 

 

 

  • Develop specifications, secure bids, and negotiate contracts
  • Travel required for training and conference related to position of MCCB Director
  • Preform various other duties relating to scope of responsibility as assigned by the Montgomery County Conservation Board

 

Minimum Education and Experience Required to Preforming the Essential Functions:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in park administration, natural resources, fish and wildlife biology, or a related field
  • Experience in administrative or management roles, work experience in public parks and/or conservation and recreational areas, and educational programs
  • Or a combination of education and experience
  • Iowa Law Enforcement Academy certification preferred
  • Strong knowledge of natural resources and recreation needs of the community
  • Understanding of the wildlife and fisheries management and habitat components required to support healthy populations
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and writing
  • Knowledge of all policies, methods, procedures and regulations of the conservation board as well as state laws
  • Ability to develop long range plans, organize work schedules and direct subordinates
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques utilized in construction and maintenance activities
  • Ability to maintain discipline and motivate staff
  • Knowledge of computer skills, to effectively operate Microsoft Office software
  • Satisfactory driving record and possession of valid Iowa Driver’s License
  • Candidate for hire must successfully pass a background check, a physical examination, vision, background screen, hearing screen/test and Iowa DOT drug screen prior to employment
  • Candidate must be able to physically lift a minimum of 50lbs
  • Currently possess and/or be able to obtain within 12 months:

 

    • Basic First Aid and CPR Certification
    • S-130/S-190 Basic Wildland Fire Training / Firefighter Certification
    • IDALS Commercial Pesticide Applicator License (Certification Code 6)
    • Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources Hunters Education Instructors Certification
