Job Summary:

Under general supervision, operates heavy construction and maintenance equipment, performs allied duties and other assigned general park construction, maintenance and repair work. Work involves responsibility for safe and efficient operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment used in a variety of projects.

Job Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.

• Performs construction, maintenance and repair of various facilities including roads, buildings, utilities, grounds, etc.

• Operates various types of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, specialized equipment, and power and hand tools.

• Services equipment and makes minor repairs and adjustments as necessary to ensure safe and efficient operation.

• Assists mechanic with major repairs as needed.

• Assists in resource management of prairies, forests, wetlands, rivers and streams.

• Assists in general labor tasks as assigned.

• Acts as a lead worker directing unskilled and semi-skilled workers assigned to assist on various projects.

• Performs functions in accordance with county and conservation safety policies and procedures.

• Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

 • Administrative supervision is received from the Unit Ranger and functional supervision is received from the Maintenance III.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

 • Functional supervision is exercised over support staff.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.

• At least two (2) years of work-related experience in wood working, carpentry, building construction, welding, surveying, plumbing and/or electrical service; OR

• Have obtained a Certification in Natural Resource Management or related field; OR

• Completed an Electrical, Plumbing, or Carpentry Apprenticeship Program.

• Previous experience in welding, metal fabrication, surveying, plumbing and/or electrical service preferred.

• Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B and be insurable under County policies. Must be able to obtain an Iowa CDL Class A within 6 months from date of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Ability to operate a variety of equipment including heavy equipment proficiently and safely.

• Ability to make minor repairs/adjustments in order to maintain light equipment.

• Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints.

• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or oral instructions and plans.

• Duties are primarily performed in outside weather conditions with frequent exposure to varied weather conditions.

• Regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

• Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. safely and perform general physical activities in accordance with work functions.
