Position: Park Ranger Department:
Conservation
FLSA: Non-Exempt Reports
To: Executive Director
Description:
Under general supervision, serves as a Peace Officer under
provisions of Chapter 350 of the Code of Iowa.
Provides law enforcement services for lands managed by the Carroll
County Conservation Board (CCCB).
Perform routine patrol duties including the enforcement of laws, rules,
regulations, maintaining good public relations and provide direction and
information. Provide general maintenance
of park grounds, facilities, and equipment.
Participate in general construction and natural resource management
projects on CCCB lands.
Duties and
Responsibilities:
The following duties are normal for this position. They are not to be construed as exclusive or
all inclusive. Other duties may be
required and assigned.
Enforce the laws and regulations pertaining to
the operation of CCCB managed areas and issue citations and/or warnings to
violators.
Perform scheduled and
non-scheduled patrol duties.
Collect user fees as required.
Answer questions relating to CCCB facilities,
parks, rules and regulations.
Provide for the safety of visitors and
administer first aid/CPR as necessary.
Investigate acts of vandalism and theft of
public property.
Keep informed on matters relating to
Conservation Board policies and procedures.
Perform all work in accordance with County
policies, procedures and safety practices.
Perform routine and emergency maintenance as
needed.
Perform natural resource management work as
needed on CCCB lands.
Attend meetings and training as necessary to
maintain certifications.
Operate and maintain machinery, tools and
equipment used in the maintenance and repair of facilities and grounds.
Provide occasional supervision of seasonal,
part-time or community service workers.
Perform facility cleaning and maintenance duties
as required.
Ability and willingness to assist with
Environmental Education programming including hunter education.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Enforce laws and regulations while maintaining effective
public relations.
Represent CCCB and Carroll County in a
professional, responsible and trustworthy manner.
Maintain effective working relationships with
co-workers, supervisors and other departments or agencies.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and
written, to individuals and groups in formal and informal situations.
Knowledge of principles and practices of park
management.
Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations
necessary in performance of law enforcement duties including, fish and game,
traffic, State Park laws, County Ordinances and CCCB rules and regulations.
Work with minimal supervision.
Organize and prioritize multiple
responsibilities.
Understand and follow oral and written
instructions.
Perform moderate manual labor for extended
periods of time.
Work outdoors in all types of weather.
Operate automotive and law enforcement equipment
including patrol unit, police radios and emergency equipment.
Repair and maintain shelters, restrooms, shower
houses, cabins, electrical boxes, plumbing and sewers.
Plant and maintain food plots, native grasses
and tree plantings through drilling, planting, broadcasting, mowing, burning
and spraying.
Repair, inspect and service equipment such as,
vehicles, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, dump trucks, trimmers.
Operate office equipment including computers.
Plan, assign and assist in the supervision of
seasonal employees.
Handle moderate levels of stress, meet deadlines
and solve problems appropriate to the position.
Stand, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, bend,
twist, crawl and reach.
Occasionally lift, carry, push and/or pull
75-100 pounds.
Have sufficient vision which permits long
periods of observation and adequate performance of duties.
Have sufficient dexterity to operate tools and
equipment.
Have sufficient mobility to complete field work
as assigned.
Ability to work various shifts including nights,
weekends and holidays as scheduled.
Minimum Education
and Training:
Four (4) year degree in natural resource related field or a
Two (2) year degree in a natural resource related field with an equivalent
combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge,
skills and abilities to perform required duties.
Special Requirements and Training:
Must be an ILEA certified peace officer or have
the ability to obtain ILEA peace officer certification within one year of hire. Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License or ability
to obtain. Commercial Pesticide Applicators License
(Category 6) or ability to obtain. Valid Driver’s License and be insurable under
County liability insurance.
Housing:
Park Ranger housing is provided at Swan Lake State
Park. All utilities (electricity, water
and gas) are provided. Phone, internet
or television service is provided by the employee. All changes to the residence must be
authorized by the Director.
Patrol Vehicle:
A patrol vehicle, fully equipped with necessary emergency
equipment including police radio, computer, lights and siren, is provided for
each Park Ranger.
Duty Equipment:
The Conservation Board will supply the Park
Ranger with the following duty equipment: 9mm handgun with duty ammunition,
appropriate duty belt and accessories, asp, mace, extra magazines, handcuffs,
Taser and a bullet proof vest.
Ammunition for qualification will be provided also.

Qualifications
Four (4) year degree in a natural resource field or two (2) year degree with experience and qualifications necessary to perform required duties of the position.
