Description

Tama County Conservation Board is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a temporary AmeriCorps 4-H Environmental Education member during Summer 2019. AmeriCorps member will be based at our headquarters at Otter Creek Lake & Park, NE of Toledo, IA.

Under the general supervision of our Naturalist, this individual will assist in the planning, development and implementation of environmental education programming for schools, community groups, summer camps and the general public in Tama County. Individual will work as part of a dynamic conservation team, gain lifelong career skills and provide great services to our local rural communities.

AmeriCorps 4-H Environmental Education seeks to provide youth with a setting that fosters: 
1. Recognizing the importance of Iowa's native resources and conservation practices 
2. Understanding the science of the natural world 
3. Experiencing the joy of outdoor activities 
4. Developing appreciation and sense of stewardship for the environment

Member duties may include the following:

• Teaching program participants about flora and fauna of Iowa, local conservation and natural resource topics, and outdoor recreation skills 
• Developing STEM educational curriculum for pre-K through adult audiences 
• Promoting TCCB programs through creation of flyers, brochures and media postings 
• Expanding summer, weekend, and afterschool public educational and outdoor recreation opportunities 
• Leading groups or volunteers in environmental stewardship and service projects in parks 
• Partnering with local school districts, preschools, non-profits, scout groups, and other organizations to develop and lead educational programs that promote healthy lifestyles, environmental stewardship, and prepare youth for STEM-related careers

Term requires the successful completion of at least 450 hours of service. Hours can be flexible, but members must complete minimum by the end of their term (August 31st, 2019). The member will receive a maximum living allowance of $3,635 distributed throughout term of service, and will receive a $1,566.14 Education Award upon completion of term. Candidate must be at least 18 years of age, be a U.S. citizen or have a permanent resident visa, be able to pass a background check, and should possess a valid driver’s license. Candidate should be able to hike, serve outdoors in varying weather conditions and serve some evening/weekend hours.

Qualifications
Background in education, environmental education, natural resources or communications.
