Summary Description
Performs manual work assisting with the maintenance and enhancement of conservation properties, such as natural areas, parks, campgrounds, and trails, and related work as assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Operations Supervisor or Natural Resource Specialist.

Multiple positions are available for the summer of 2022. These positions will offer opportunities in natural resource work, equipment use and park facility and grounds maintenance. The positions start May 16, 2022 and end approximately August 19, 2022. Accommodations may be made for school schedules. Positions are based at McFarland Park in Ames or at Hickory Grove Park in Colo.

Hours will average 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday and may include some weekends and holidays.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Performs work such as mowing, string trimming, chainsawing, litter control, general carpentry, prairie and forest restoration, invasive species removal, trail maintenance and minor equipment maintenance.
Reports and assists in repairing safety hazards.
Offers assistance and information to the public.
Assists staff with area monitoring.
Performs related tasks as assigned.

Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED; some college coursework in Natural Resources or a related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of building, park and equipment maintenance; knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building and park equipment and tools including but not limited to trucks, tractors, mowers, brush chippers, chain saws, firefighting equipment, and power tools; ability to operate standard office equipment and related hardware and software; ability to learn specialized software related to department needs; ability to learn specialized equipment related to business needs; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.
