JOB TITLE: Interpretive Park Technician

LOATION:  Hardin County Conservation – Calkins Nature Area, Iowa Falls, Iowa

SUMMARY: We are looking for a motivated self-starter to fill our vacancy of Interpretive Park Technician.  This employee is stationed at Calkins Nature Area and duties will include natural resource management, facility and equipment maintenance, care and maintenance of live wildlife exhibits, assist in maintaining our website and social media presence, and occasional environmental education programming. Under direct supervision, this employee assists the Park Manager in planning, developing, coordinating and performing all daily work activities associated with the operation and promotion of the nature center, wildlife exhibits, grounds and museum. Will also perform related duties as required for the Hardin County Conservation Board to include conducting prescribed fires, park maintenance, educational programs and public events. The position is a permanent, full-time position and will have a Sunday-Thursday work schedule although occasional night and weekend hours will be required.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with the public, fellow staff and board members.  They must also show advanced problem solving ability and be able to work independently or as part of a team.  Physical working conditions can be variable and applicants must be able to work in heat, cold, rain, snow and windy conditions as well as the physical ability to effectively operate the required tools and equipment. 

Candidate must reside, or be willing to relocate, in Hardin County or within 30 miles of Calkins Nature Area.  Permanent employment is subject to a 90 day probationary period.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE (minimum):

Completion of a Associates degree or higher in Conservation, Biology, Forestry, Environmental Studies or similar with at least 2 years of experience.  Qualifying experience includes regular full-time employment, seasonal employment or internships that furthered the development of professional skills and knowledge Preference will be given to applicants with experience in chainsaw operation, equipment maintenance, prescribed burning, basic construction practices, and public speaking is desired as well as a working knowledge of native plants and wildlife.

Applicants are required to have an Iowa Driver’s License and be insurable under the county’s policy.  The successful job candidate must also pass a criminal background check prior to the start of employment.

Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License, NWCG S-130 & S-190, and CPR & first aid certification are required or must be obtained within the first 9 months of employment.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Starting Salary: $42,000-$43,000 

Benefits:  Those benefits allowed full-time county employees as approved by the board including: health insurance, sick leave, vacation time, paid holidays, life insurance and uniform allowance.

Qualifications
