RESOURCE TECHNICIAN
LINN COUNTY CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT
Performs unskilled to semi-skilled tasks required in the maintenance of parks and park facilities and/or natural resource management activities in the County. Work is performed under immediate supervision. Essential functions for Resource Technician assigned to park districts: Performs maintenance work such as repair and upkeep of park lodges, shelters, restrooms, park furniture and playground equipment. Performs routine maintenance duties such as mowing grass, trimming and mowing of trails, woodchipping of trees, dump stations and other plantings. Paints signs, picnic tables and other wooden facilities. Picks up refuse. Operates and maintains all tool and equipment such as tractors, trucks, mowers, power hand tools, welder, chainsaw, general hand tools, and sprayers. Performs construction and development of public use areas such as hiking and skiing trails, parking areas, and playgrounds, including necessary landscaping and picnic area development and maintenance. Installs park boundary and interior fences. Responsible for the care and operational function of area electrical and water systems, planting of trees, plowing snow, road restoration and preservation, splitting firewood, spraying of road right-of-ways, and parking lots. Supervises seasonal and subordinate employees. Registers campers and lodge groups and provides assistance to campers and park users. Assists in the enforcement of park, county, and state rules and regulations. Prepares monthly reports and performs equipment checks. Assists in maintaining the wildlife area by feeding and watering animals. Maintains overall health of animals. May be required to conduct public relations programs such as talks and media shows. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Essential functions for Resource Technician assigned to natural resources: Performs a variety of natural resource management activities such as planting trees, prairies, wetlands and food plots; prairie, wetland, and forest management activities including burning, mowing, tree trimming and removal, and invasive species control. Operates and maintains equipment such as tractors, trucks, mowers, tree spade, chipper, Fecon, skid steer, chainsaw, sprayers, power hand tools, welder, and general hand tools. Performs equipment checks and minor maintenance on equipment. Applies pesticides as required for prairie and food plot establishment and tree plantings. Assists parks districts as needed with routine park maintenance activities such as splitting firewood, landscaping, trail and trailside mowing, the care and operational function of area electrical and water systems, planting of trees, plowing snow, road restoration and preservation, spraying of road right-of-ways and parking lots. May be required to conduct public relations programs such as demonstrating proper tree planting and prairie burning techniques. Performs all other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent required plus college level coursework in the Natural Resources field. Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in the natural resource area; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge in the operation of manual tools and equipment and ability to learn operation of technical equipment. Ability to perform manual labor and to work outside under all types of weather conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with others and to maintain good public relations. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Possession of a Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License and a valid State of Iowa Driver’s License is required. Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement required within six (6) months of hire for Resource Technicians assigned to work the boat concession at Pinicon Ridge Park. Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment. Regular attendance required.
