2024 Marshall County Conservation Seasonal Naturalist Intern
Description: The position available will assist the Naturalist in developing and presenting interpretive programs to schools, campers, summer camps, the public, and other groups. The Naturalist intern may also coordinate special events and programs. Design and construct interpretive displays. Prepare publicity materials, including news releases, social media posts, and radio reports. Occasional office work, cleaning, and other duties may need to be completed. General maintenance and upkeep of the Conservation Center displays, educational supplies, and grounds may be required.
Qualifications: Either be enrolled in or have a degree in parks & recreation, wildlife biology, ecology, natural resource management, education, or a related field of study. Have an interest in educating youth and adults about our natural world. Relevant experience may be considered in place of education. The applicant must also possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a chauffeur’s license. Ability to routinely stand, walk, sit, kneel, stoop, balance, climb, and safely operate various hand and power tools. Applicant must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, follow written and oral instructions, and work without supervision. Outdoor work will likely include contact with dust, dirt, chemicals, noise, severe weather conditions (extreme temperatures, humidity, wind, rain, and flood), and exposure to outdoor elements such as mosquitoes, ticks, various plants, pollens, and fungi. Willingness to research and learn about the natural history of the area. General knowledge of outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, kayaking, and orienteering. Must have a basic knowledge of teaching skills and be able to communicate with individuals and groups of all ages. Ability to operate computers and audiovisual equipment for program delivery. First Aid and CPR certification are preferred but not mandatory.
Work Schedule: The employment period is late May to late August (specific starting and ending dates are flexible, depending on the applicant’s schedule), Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., an average of 40 hours/week. Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required.
Compensation: Range $12.00 to $15.00 per hour, depending on prior experience.
