Snowshoe Building Course - Sessions in October

Wickiup Hill Learning Center, Linn County

Tuesday, October 6, 2020

This fall, Linn County Conservation will again offer the opportunity for you to build a pair of traditional snowshoes. Naturalist Chuck Ungs will lead this popular program, where these sets are created for hiking, unique gifts, or even decorations.

Participants should plan to attend the evening weaving sessions on Tuesday Oct. 6, 13 and 20. The evening classes will run from 6 - 9 p.m. at Wickiup Hill Learning Center. Attendance at all three lacing sessions is highly recommended for best results.  Additional evenings will be needed to varnish the shoes at our Services Shop at 3173 Highway 13, Marion (corner of Highway 13 and County Home Road) in the days following snowshoe construction.  For best results, a minimum of three to four of these evenings will be required to varnish the shoes properly. With some weaving time invested at home, the snowshoes should be finished by Oct. 29.

Participants must register on-line and pay by Sept. 22, so kits can be ordered. The $225 class fee includes the cost of a snowshoe kit, a binding set, instruction and varnish for each participant. Registration is under Events at Linncountyparks.com.  We will maintain social distancing and ask participants to wear masks and bring your own hand sani.  For more details and questions about options, call Chuck at 319-892-6485.  Kit building typically requires the manual dexterity of someone high school age or older. Class size is limited to 6.
