Join us at Hitchcock Nature Center on Saturday, March 7th at 9:00 a.m. for a free, introductory session of a new 2020 programming series, "A Land Ethic Workshop". Join instructor Ron Cisar as we celebrate the life & legacy of famous naturalist & philosopher Aldo Leopold. This free session will focus on Leopold's essay "Good Oak" from his classic work "A Sand County Almanac".

Participants in this introductory session will study & learn:

  • How one oak affects the biological community & reveals secrets of the past
  • The ecological significance of Iowa's Loess Hills landform
  • The biographical history of Iowa's own Aldo LeopoldLeopold's jounaling methods
  • How future generations of naturalists followed in Leopold's footsteps

Participants will also take to the Hitchcock trails for a short hike to explore the signs of the season before ending the day with a song.

This program is free with paid park admission. Online pre-registration is required as space is limited. .This program is intended for participants age 14 & over with an interest in the natural world, no experience or prior knowledge is needed to participate. For questions not answered online please call 712-545-3283. 

 

About "A Land Ethic Workshop"

This program is designed to introduce participants to our 10 month long programming series "A Land Ethic Workshop" which will focus on the work & life of naturalist & Iowa native Aldo Leopold. Each month participants will explore a new work by Leopold coupled with hands on activities such as hikes, aquatic studies, guest lectures, sketching, journaling and more. Programs are from 9:00 a.m. to noon & occur monthly, one Saturday per month, March through December. Participants may register for individual sessions or opt to attend all 2020 sessions. Participants do not need to attend every program session. Individual sessions are $15.00 per person & our full programming series of 10 sessions is $75.00. Participants should note that classes will be held at Hitchcock Nature Center & will at times require pedestrian travel over difficult terrain; some sessions may be physically challenging. Portions of each session will occur outdoors, students should come prepared for the weather & the elements.
