This public hunting and recreation area is truly a hidden gem. This area covers 106.16 acres and the scenic overlook on the southern end offers excellent sunset vistas and fall color viewing of the Iowa River Valley. A covered shelter is the perfect location for your special event. Hiking trails are plentiful and will guide you towards the river, through the woods, and around a restored wetland brimming with wildlife. Or, wade upstream through the spring-fed creek and take your time climbing over huge granite boulders and exploring sandbars. This particular area has the unique feature of being located at the junction of 3 major Iowa landform regions: the recently glaciated Des Moines Lobe, the wind-and ice-swept Iowan Erosion Surface, and the heavily dissected Southern Iowa Drift Plain.

With diverse and challenging topography, rare native ecosystems including savanna, prairie, forest, & wetland, and over 260 hundred acres to explore, this area is well-suited to the wilderness enthusiast who seeks solitude. Hunting, hiking, and river fishing are the primary uses of this area.
