Modern Camping at Sportsman Park is permitted in designated areas only. Camping is restricted to one basic unit per site except that a small tent may be placed on the site with the basic unit, if occupied by immediate family.  The area occupied by the small tent shall be no more than 8 feet by 10 feet and the tent shall hold no more than four (4) people.

 The maximum number of people using a campsite is six (6) except for the following:

  • Families that exceed six persons may be allowed on one campsite if all members are immediate family and cannot logically be split to occupy two campsites.

Immediate family means spouses, parents or legal guardians, domestic partners, dependent children and grandparents.

The use of one picnic table per camping unit is permitted.

Campers are allowed one vehicle which can be used for transportation to be parked at a campsite.  Additional vehicles must park in the visitor parking area.

Each campsite has electricity, there is one hydrant to fill your fresh water tank, there is no dump station.

All garbage is carry in - carry out.

One block from the Raccoon River Valley Trail near Dawson, Iowa.  Ride the trail and make an overnight stop to relax!

Hours of Operation & Seasons

Sportsman Park is open year around.

The gate shall not be locked.  The gate will be closed at 10:00 pm and opened by 8:00 am, May - October.  The gate will be closed at 5:00 pm and opened at 8:00 am, November - April.

Closures

Because our first concern for anyone using park roadways is safety, if the snow hasn’t been removed, or if the surface is too slick, the gates will remain closed.
