Making Maple Syrup

JOHNSON COUNTY EDUCATION PROGRAMS, Johnson County

Thursday, February 16, 2023

Learn all about making your own maple syrup during this hands on program. We will walk into Cedar River Crossing to identify appropriate trees and set them up for collecting sap. You will get some sticky history and an introduction to different types of equipment. Interested participants can harvest the sap from the tree they tap and boil it themselves!

**Interested participants can rent equipment for $5 (Due at the beginning of the program) to either tap a tree at Cedar River Crossing, or take the equipment to their own yard to tap a maple tree there. Equipment includes a tap, plastic tubing, and a plastic bucket or jug to collect sap. Equipment is limited and will be offered in order of registration. You are not required to rent equipment to join this program and participate in a tree tapping demonstration.

**Depending on weather, we may start the program at the Sutliff Operations Center, across the road from the north access of Cedar River Crossing.

An email will be sent to all registered participants with further details as the events gets closer.Registration closes 24 hours in advance. If you are fully registered, you can expect to receive an email "receipt" from MyCountyParks after registration. You will also receive an email from the leading naturalist a couple days in advance of the program. If you do not receive these emails, you may not be registered; call 319-645-1011 for assistance in this case.
