Get certified as a Master River Steward!

This is a companion course to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI at ISU) River Stewardship Class. The OLLI at ISU class is for anyone 50+ and requires a small membership fee and class fee. (link coming soon). You must be enrolled in the River Stewardship Class to take the lab.

To become certified, you must attend the OLLI classes, complete all 8 lab sessions (including homework assignments), and design and complete a subsequent volunteer project. Lab will be held on September 13, 20, 27, and October 4, 11, 18, 25. An additional lab date will be selected so participants can present their volunteer projects.

Participants can expect a course that focuses on riverine systems, including skills to paddle and navigate rivers, restoring aquatic habitat, improving water quality, and understanding policies related to floodplains, river protection, and restoration. 

The lab portion is co-sponsored by Prairie Rivers of Iowa and Iowa Rivers Revival.   

Expectations. To become a Master River Steward you need to:

  • complete the classroom portion through the  OLLI at ISU River Stewardship Course 
  • have an interest in river conservation and environmental issues and concerns
  • complete all 8 sessions, including small homework assignments
  • provide at least 32 hours of volunteer efforts after the training, usually done as a watershed group with other MRSP participants.
  • have a willingness to learn and share ideas with others

    The eight week course will take place on the following dates/times (please note topic is subject to change):

    • 9/13/18: 1:00-3:30 PM
    • 9/20/18: 1:00-3:30 PM
    • 9/27/18: 1:00-3:30 PM
    • 10/4/18: 1:00-3:30 PM
    • 10/11/18: 1:00-3:30 PM
    • 10/18/18: 1:00-3:30 PM
    • 10/25/18: 1:00-3:30 PM

    Please dress for the weather as each class will have an outside component.
