Description

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Position is responsible to serve as part of the Director's management team and provide professional advice into the overall management of Hillview Recreation Area & all other conservation areas.  This person performs simple & complex tasks to meet the management objectives of said conservation areas.  This person is also responsible for the enforcement of the Code of Iowa and local regulations to protect facilities, resources, and the public.  This is a required occupancy position with a response time of a maximum of 20 minutes to Hillview Recreation Area within Plymouth County.  Non-standard work week plus weekend & holiday work required; ability to report for work on short notice; overnight travel occasionally required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES

  • enforces the Code of Iowa and local rules/ regulations according to conservation board policies
  • provides reports on all LE activities to Director and keeps staff informed of any potentially dangerous situations or persons
  • provides for the safety of area visitors
  • makes reservations and collects fees for the use of facilities & equipment
  • assist with record-keeping activities
  • provides periodic assistance with public programs & clinics
  • supervises and trains seasonal & full time employees as assigned
  • participates in fish and wildlife management & habitat improvement activities
  • serves in various capacities for department prescribed fire program
  • assures facilities are clean, maintained, and operable for the public
  • operates and/or assists in the operation of Hillview's tubing hill
  • assures turf, tree care, and other vegetation management activities are completed on schedule & in a timely manner
  • assures boundary fence, buildings, roads, and trail maintenance is completed on schedule & in a timely manner
  • makes timely purchases of materials & supplies within budget guidelines and with Director's approval
  • assures maintenance & repairs on assigned vehicles are completed in a timely and cost effective manner
  • completes regular maintenance on law enforcement duty gear
  • completes regular inspections of all department fire extinguishers
  • completes various other duties as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS/ KNOWLEDGE

  • must be a certified peace officer in the State of Iowa or must meet all entrance requirements to attend ILEA approved training school
  • must be able to operate vehicles & equipment necessary in management of conservation areas & facilities
  • must possess excellent communication skills, verbal and written; especially under stressful situations
  • must be able to perform and communicate professionally while under extreme physical and/or social pressure
  • must possess basic computer program skills
  • must possess the knowledge and skills of basic construction methods
  • must possess the knowledge of basic fisheries & wildlife habitat management practices

REQUIRED WITHIN 1 YEAR of EMPLOYMENT

  • acquire & maintain certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Iowa
  • acquire & maintain the ability to effectively communicate on a two way radio while under extreme stress
  • acquire & maintain certification in CPR and Iowa Law Enforcement Emergency Care Provider
  • acquire & maintain Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License- Category 6
  • complete & maintain currency in NWCG S-130/190, I-100 & L-180
  • knowledge of interagency cooperation in Plymouth County (Sheriff's Dept, Iowa DNR, TNC)

Compliance with employee handbook, county policies, department work rules, and supervisor or elected official directives



Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university with major course work in the field of environmental education, natural resources, or the equivalent in related work experience. Valid current driver's license.
