Description
Illustrative Examples of Duties:
-
Designs, develops and conducts
conservation education, outdoor recreational and interpretive programs and
activities for schools, special populations, senior groups, youth groups, civic
groups, and general public; plans and implements age specific educational
programs and activities related to natural resource management, ecology,
recreation, cultural heritage, and other environmental topics.
- Assists with the
operation, maintenance, and staffing of the Outdoor Recreation and Wellness
Center rentals and programs.
- Assists with
maintenance and construction of indoor and outdoor exhibits, including live
animal displays.
- Writes and designs brochures,
newsletters, power point programs, informational displays, and other
educational resource materials; promotes programs through social media.
- Assists with the
development of funding for the Environmental Education program, including grant
writing.
- Assists in the
preparation of reports, budgets, and long range program planning.
- Performs related
duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and
Abilities:
-
Thorough knowledge of
trends in conservation and environmental education.
- Considerable knowledge
of principles and practices of conservation, ecology, and related subjects
including local flora and fauna.
- Basic knowledge of social media platforms and
web-based software services and applications.
- Skill in public speaking.
- Ability to integrate environmental education
goals and objectives with current trends in educational methods and curriculum
deliver.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English,
both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to present information effectively to a
variety of different audiences.
- Ability to operate personal computer, utilize
social media and web-based software services and applications, such as Word,
Excel, Power Point, and In-Design, and operate audio-visual equipment effectively.
- Ability to develop long range goals and
objectives.
- Ability to schedule and implement multiple
projects and meet deadlines.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, volunteers, representatives
of other organizations, and the general public.
- Ability to interpret
and apply department rules and policies.
- Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to safely operate and maintain a variety
of small tools and equipment.
- Ability to work a non-standard work week,
including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather
conditions and walk and/or stand for prolonged periods.
Special Requirements:

A criminal background check is required.

A drug screen is required prior to final offer
of employment.
- Candidate must pass a post-employment offer
physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure candidate meets
the essential physical requirements of the position.
- CPR/AED and First Aid training and certification
is required within six months of hire.
- A valid State of Iowa chauffeur’s license is
required.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in environmental education, natural science, recreation, ecology, or related field, and
