CONSTRUCTION TECHNICIAN LEISURE SERVICES

Description

Illustrative Examples of Work:

1. Assists and provides guidance to semi-skilled laborers; answers questions, provides instruction, and assists with the more difficult tasks.

2. Interprets work orders, blueprints, and conceptual work projects. 

3. Performs skilled hand and bench work in a carpentry/maintenance shop; operates and maintains saws planers, jointers, shapers, and other related woodworking equipment common to the trade. 

4. Builds forms, walls, stairways and partitions; installs and repairs window frames, door frames, drywall, doors, screens, and other wooden fixtures. 

5. Builds and/or repairs cabinets, counters, desk tops, shelves, bookcases, and other furniture. 

6. Performs roofing and re-roofing using metal, laminate and cedar materials. 

7. Applies floor coverings, wall coverings, and ceiling and floor tiles. 

8. Mixes paints, sets up work areas, and performs skilled application of interior/exterior primers, paints, and sealants. 

9. Construct forms, places, and finishes concrete and cement work. 

10. Performs masonry work to include natural stone, brick, and other materials. 

11. Operates motorized grading equipment including skid loaders, tractors, track excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and forklifts. 

12. Cuts and threads pipe, sweat copper, set fixtures, install valves, repair sloan valves and vacuum breakers; operates trenching equipment and install buried water supply lines; trouble-shoots plumbing repairs. 

13. Performs electrical diagnosis, repairs, and installations of circuitry up to and including 220 volt single phase and installs EMT and ROMEX from panel to point of use. 

14. Performs welding, cutting, and steel fabrication. 

15. Performs related duties as assigned.  

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques used in the construction and maintenance trades.

Knowledge and familiarization with OSHA construction safety requirements.

Knowledge of construction, electrical, plumbing, and uniform building codes. 

Ability to safely use portable electrical hand-held tools such as circular saws, drills, hammer drills, jack hammers, routers, pneumatic nailers, airless paint sprayers, and drywall texture. 

Ability to safely use stationary wood working equipment such as table saws, radial arm saws, band saws, planers, jointers, and shapers. Skill in the safe use of ladders and scaffolds at various heights. 

Ability to perform safe work with electric arc welders/oxy-acetylene torches. Ability to provide guidance, direction, and instructions to workers.

Ability to perform skilled trades work in confined work spaces. 

Ability to understand and provide oral and written instructions. 

Ability to interpret and work from sketches, drawings, plans, and blueprints. 

Ability to plan/organize maintenance, repair, and construction projects in efficient, proper sequences. 

Ability to make time and material estimates. 

Ability to perform strenuous physical labor such as moving picnic tables, construction activities, and forestry related work in rough/uneven terrain under any type of weather condition. 

Ability to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly.  

Training and Experience:

Completion of a training program in one or more of the building trades (carpentry, electrical, heating/ventilation, plumbing/steam fitting, painting, welding) through a technical school or trade union, and 

Two years of full-time journey level skilled trade experience, or 

Graduation from High School or equivalent, and 

Five years of full time journey level skilled trade experience, or 

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. 

Special Requirement: 

Certification in operation of forklifts is required within six months of hire. 

A criminal background check is required. 

In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 382,392 & 40), this job requires a drug screen prior to final offer of employment and on-going participation in the Polk County random drug testing program. 

A valid State of Iowa Class A commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required. 

Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position. 

This position may require a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
