Codfish Hollow Prairie Walk

Hurstville Interpretive Center, Jackson County

Wednesday, May 13, 2020

May is the season for bird foot violets, rock sandwort, puccoon, thousands of shooting stars, and others, as well as a great number of erupting summer plants. Join Ray & Patti Hamilton for a walk on their native upland hill prairie located NE of Maquoketa to learn more about this remnant prairie, prairie restoration, and native prairie plants.

Directions: From Highway 64 at the east edge of Maquoketa, turn north on highway 62 and go one mile to 35th st. (aka Codfish Hollow Rd). Turn right and go 4 miles to the prairie which will be evident at the NW corner of Codfish Hollow Rd and 288th Ave. You can also type in our neighbors to your phone: Codfish Hollow Barnstormers.

The 60 acre parcel, with 20 acres of one dozen limestone outcrops, is covered with high quality native upland hill prairie. These native prairie hills have been interconnected with 20 acres of 30 year old very local ecotype prairie restoration. There are 20 acres of mixed grassland, woodland and savanna. This site is a pioneer for both private native site management and a biological preserve for locally imperiled native species. The Hamilton's prairie is home to over 100 varieties of native prairie plants, native prairie butterflies, hazel thickets, orchids, one of the most northern native sites on the planet for purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), leonardus skipper butterfly, which at the time of discovery had not been recorded in eastern Iowa since the 1800’s, seasonal nighthawk nesting, seasonal woodcock nesting, 5-lined skinks, and the occasional bobcat and pileated woodpecker.Cultural features include a primitive lime kiln site, as well as some of the early 1900 lime product still on an original rock foundation.

Questions, contact Jackson County Conservation Board 563-652-3783. Dress for the weather and be prepared to walk through the prairie.
