Bird Walk with Wendy, Part 1

Wickiup Hill Learning Center, Linn County

Tuesday, April 23, 2024

Are you interested in bird watching or are you a seasoned veteran at the hobby?  We are putting together several hikes that we hope will illustrate the changes that occur in our native plants as well as in our bird species that are in the area around Wickiup during this transitional period.  Under normal circumstances we would expect an absence of a few of the summer songbird visitors during the earlier hike and with normal migrations we would expect the 2nd hike to be heavy with these birds moving through.  Going along on both hikes should be a super way to catch some of these beautiful birds as they pass through, with some species sticking around to nest locally.

Accompanying you on the hike will be Wendy VanDeWalle, a long-time birder who works as a part-time Avian Biologist for an environmental consulting company. Wendy can show people how to use EBird application to keep track of their bird sightings.  Your other host will be a Naturalist, who will provide commentary on plants and other life along the way as well.  We will gather in front of the building near the kiosk and will hike together from 8:30 to 10 AM each day.  Participants should plan for muddy trails and for possible briars and thorns should one wander off trail.  This hike is sponsored by LCCD and by the Iowa Ornithologists Union.  We look forward to seeing you there! This event is free, but registration is required.
