Youth Ice Age Backpacking Trip

July 11-13, 2023

Youth ages 12-17 are invited to participate in a backpacking trip along the Ice Age Trail in Chippewa County, Wisconsin.

Youth will hike 10+ miles of the Ice Age trail, carrying gear in a backpack, tent camping along the way, filtering water, cooking over stoves, and immersing themselves in the outdoors.

Trip will be led by staff with Clinton, Dubuque, and Jackson County Conservation Departments.

Backpacks, tents, food, cookstoves, and other gear will be provided. Youth will need to bring their own clothing, good hiking shoes, and other personal gear.

A mandatory pre-trip meeting will be held Friday, July 7 from 9:00-Noon at the Hurstville Interpretive Center. At the meeting, participants will meet each other and the leaders, learn more about the gear we will be using (tents, water filters, cook stoves), review the packing list, select a backpack to take home to pack their things, and ask questions.

The trip will begin on the morning of Tuesday, July 11. Youth can meet a Naturalist at select locations in Clinton, Jackson & Dubuque Counties. We’ll then all meet up at Swiss Valley Nature Center near Dubuque to hand out group gear and finalize packing. We will travel to Chippewa County, Wisconsin, and hike to our first campsite. Day two, after breakfast and packing up, we will backpack to our next campsite. Thursday morning, we will hike to our vehicles and drive home.
