JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Natural Resources Coordinator, assists in the maintenance and development of wildlife management areas, woodlands, parks and canoe access sites functioning sometimes as a crew leader for seasonal employees, assisting in seasonal management activities as required; assisting in various construction, maintenance and operational activities as assigned.


  • Maintains wildlife management areas including mowing, spraying for noxious weed control and woody cover management, seeding, seed harvest, fencing, signage, prairie burns, roadway and parking lot maintenance.
  • Assists in forest management including planting, trimming, selective removal and harvest.
  • Maintains grounds and facilities primarily in Natural Resource areas including mowing and trimming of grass, seeding, chemical applications, trimming of trees or removal based on management needs.
  • Assists in checking and repair of utility systems for proper function – for example, tile checks and intakes.
  • Identifies and corrects, where possible, potential or real hazards within the work place which could lead to accidents or potential Department liability.
  • Provides direct supervision to assigned seasonal staff or volunteers working with them on specific tasks.


  • Operation and maintenance of mowers, tractors and other power equipment including RTV and chemical spraying equipment, power hand tools, chainsaws pole pruner, and the like.
  • Proper housekeeping principles and practices utilizing cleaning equipment of limited diversity and complexity.
  • Abilities to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs above head, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work with arms above shoulders, work in the out of doors during all seasons of the year.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work hours and days including non standard work week which are compatible with Department operating needs.
  • Ability to read and write the English language, to keep records as required.  


  • Possession of a valid Iowa Commercial Drivers license preferred 
  • Pesticide Applicators license, or ability to obtain. 
  • Minimum of High School graduate or GED equivalent, preference of education or work experience in a natural resource curriculum/field.

SALARY:  $10.00 per hour.  40 hour non-scheduled work week with some possible weekend duties.  Other benefits may apply.
