Toolesboro Mounds and Museum, NHL
The Hopewellian mounds at Toolesboro are among the best-preserved and accessible remnants of an ancient culture flourishing from around 200 B.C. to 300 A.D. The five-acre site includes several large surviving mounds, an education center and a prairie demonstration plot.
The small visitor center offers visitors information about the Hopewellian mound builders and other native cultures that have occupied the area throughout history.
Location
Toolesboro Mounds and Museum is registered as a National Historic Landmark. Sitting on 6-acres of land, this are is owned by the State Historical Society and managed by Louisa County Conservation. It is located along the Great River Road Scenic Byway, just off County Road 99 in Louisa County, Iowa. The area is used for the preservation and education of the unique cultural history found in Louisa County.
