Estherville Rock Garden

Overview

The Estherville Rock Garden was dedicated on August 23, 1933 as part of the Roosevelt New Deal WPA program. Its creator was Estherville City Council member Charles Kilgore who planned and supervised the 900 tons of area rock and the 3772 man hours of work that went into its construction. Thirty-six men worked for food for six months on the project. The big wheel is part of the saw and grist mill that was located on the river from 1869-1905. Many floods caused the Rock Garden to be silted in and diminished in size. In 1996, Eagle Scout Aaron Omtvedt organized an effort to resurrect the garden and restore it to community use. The Estherville Garden Club maintains it today.
