Seed Collecting

Event Summary

Step into the fall prairie with Buena Vista County Conservation for a hands‑on seed collecting adventure!

During this program, participants will learn how to identify native prairie seed heads, collect seeds responsibly, and understand how these plants prepare for winter.

We’ll walk through the prairie together, exploring a variety of grasses and flowers while discussing what each species looks like at the end of the growing season. Participants will practice recognizing mature seed heads, learn simple techniques for gathering and storing seeds, and discover how these seeds can be used in spring planting and restoration projects.

This program is perfect for anyone interested in prairie ecology, habitat restoration, or learning more about Iowa’s native plants. All ages are welcome, and no prior experience is needed.

Please dress for outdoor conditions and bring a small container or paper bag for seed collection. Gardening or work gloves are recommended.

We look forward to exploring the prairie with you!
