Join us in the big red barn to hear from David Connon about Josiah Grinnell & his role in the Underground Railroad here in Iowa. This program is free for all to attend. “Preacher”, “congressman” “negro stealer”: he was called all of those things during his life. Mr. Connon will tell the story of racism, as well as noble actions and will highlight abolitionist John Brown’s visit to the city of Grinnell and Grinnell’s first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in the public schools.Mr. Connon belongs to the Humanities Iowa Speaker’s Bureau and is an independent researcher and writer researching the Iowa Underground Railroad. He works as an historical interpreter at Living History Farms and is the great-great-grandson of two Union veterans.The house will be also be open for tours. The House tour fee is $5 for persons who have high school aged & older. Children are free.Bring your lawn chairs and join us for an interesting learning experience. Refreshments will be available.
