Dan Cohen will present Securing the Promise: Iowa’s Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund on February 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Osborne Welcome Center.
Cohen recently retired as the Director for the Buchanan County Conservation and now continues his work as an outdoor writer and wildlife photographer. His work can be found on his Nature Communications Substack: https://dwcohen81.substack.com/.
From 2006-2010, Cohen represented county conservation boards on the Governor-appointed Sustainable Funding Committee which made the recommendation to create a constitutionally-protected Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund. He was involved with the Iowa’s Water and Legacy (IWiLL) campaign to get the initiative through the Iowa Legislature and eventually on the 2010 general election ballot, which succeeded with a super-majority vote (63.8%) of Iowans. For the past 15+ years, Cohen has continued to be part of the effort to get legislators to complete the promise to Iowans and fund the Trust.
This presentation will explore Iowa’s Natural Resources and Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund and how it supports conservation and outdoor recreation across the state. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the Trust, and how its funding will support permanent, substantial, and reliable improvements to our water quality, protect our soil, enhance our wildlife habitat, and increase outdoor recreation opportunities throughout Iowa.
Community members are encouraged to attend this free presentation to learn how the Trust Fund works, why it matters, and what steps can be taken to secure its future for Iowa’s natural resources and outdoor spaces.
The Osborne Center is located on Highway 13, ten miles north of Strawberry Point or five miles south of Elkader. The center is open from 8:00am to 4:00pm, Monday-Friday. Please call 563-245-1516 for more information or visit www.claytoncountyconservation.org.
