The Pioneer Trail
Discover The Pioneer Trail in Grundy Center
Spanning from Holland to Grundy Center, Morrison, and finally ending at the outskirts of Reinbeck, this trail was created from the railroad bed that once served as a vital link between these communities. Today, the trail also runs parallel to eight conservation board areas: The Holland Marsh, the Wolfe Family Preserve, the C.E. Shearn Memorial Park, the Grundy County Heritage Museum, the Buckles Wildlife Area, the Gutknecht Roadside Park, the Copley-Strohbehn Preserve, and the Reinbeck section of the Grundy County Greenbelt.
From Holland to Grundy Center the trail is paved. From the Wolfe Family Preserve and onwards, the surface is crushed limestone. This trail makes a great destination for those looking to enjoy hiking, running, bike riding, and cross-country skiing in the winter. Motorized vehicles and hunting are prohibited on the trail, except snowmobiles are allowed from Wolfe Family Preserve to Gutknecht Roadside Park, and horses must be kept on the mowed grass paths along the limestone trail. Iowa wildlife and native vegetation are all frequently found along the way – we invite you to take a journey to discover them like a true Pioneer!
