Public Bird Mist Netting & Banding Demo
MAY 23 2026 9:00 AM
Event Summary
Iowa is part of the Mississippi flyway, where 40% of North America's birds migrate every spring. Some will stay in Iowa all summer and fall, while others will visit for only a couples weeks or a month. These birds can give us valuable information on bird migrations patterns and bird behavior.
Dr. David Shealer, a professor at Loras College, will be leading a bird mist netting demonstration, showing how scientists catch and study birds migrating through Iowa. Demonstrations will happen from 9-12 and participants can come and go as they please.
We will be meeting at Bellevue State Park and the Nelson Unit, and will be set up down the paved trail at the butterfly garden. Follow the driveway up the hill into the park. Once you reach the top of the hill, the trail is to the right, with parking available at the head of the trail.
