Event Summary

Hike through the park with us and our mobile bat acoustic detector- this device will identify the bat species calling as they hunt! As we hike, we will discuss native bats and their conservation concerns, as well as our ongoing citizen science research. Be prepared to hike past sunset- this means appropriate footwear for trails and low visibility, and a re-light equipped headlamp if you have one. You may want protective clothing against mosquitos as we will not spray insect repellant on the hike. This is a great opportunity for families with older children, as we will be hiking in the dark and maintaining a quiet presence on the trail as we learn about our native bats and discover which species are present at Whitewater Canyon Wildlife Area!

Jackson County Conservation and Dubuque County Conservation are partnering to run various citizen science initiatives, including bat surveys! To learn about more of our projects or how you can get more involved, please email jrodewald@jacksoncounty.iowa.gov.
