Prairie Seed Harvest
OCT 15 2025 10:00 AM
Event Summary
This week's harvest will take place at Cedar River Crossing; target species is TBD. We may hike between 1-2 miles round trip into the property. If conditions are favorable, we may focus on ironweed in a wetland area that may be wet or muddy.
No special training is required for this event, nor prior experience. Instruction and species ID tips will be provided at the start of the program.
Volunteers should wear pants, closed-toe shoes, and pack a long-sleeve option for work in the prairie. Volunteers can expect to walk off-trail into tall vegetation and work on uneven terrain.
Pack work gloves and a set of hand clippers if available. JCC will provide collection buckets and clippers to those who need them.
Volunteers are welcome to take a small amount of seed home for their own native gardens/plantings.
Seed harvests are dependent on seed ripeness, weather and dry seed conditions. We will cancel if raining or if seed is too wet from recent rain. Locations may need to change is target species is not ready to harvest.
All seeds will be distributed between JCC restoration projects and Pollinator Partnership's Project Wingspan in support of regional prairie restorations.
Registration automatically closes one day in advance. If you are fully registered, you can expect to receive an email "receipt" from MyCountyParks after registration. You will also receive an email from the leading naturalist a couple days in advance of the program. If you do not receive these emails, you may not be registered; call 319-645-1011 for assistance in this case.
JCC is committed to providing equal opportunity for participation in all programs, services and activities. We welcome and encourage people with disabilities to attend programs and events. Accommodations may be requested by contacting naturalist staff at 319-645-1011 or jccnaturalists@gmail.com
