Map Reading Challenge Course

Event Summary

Practice map-reading skills to find hidden points scattered both on and off-trail at Cangleska Wakan and Big Grove Preserve. Mark progress along the way with special markers at each point, and find as many points as you can before the cut-off time of 3:00 p.m.

There will be two course options:

Beginner: This course will feature 6 points all along the trails at Cangleska Wakan. It will still provide a chance to practice reading topographic maps, but you will never be trekking-off trail to reach any of the points. Total distance traveled will be ~2-2.5 miles.

Advanced: This course will feature 8 points all off trail and scattered between Cangleska Wakan, Big Grove Preserve, and the Army Corps lands. This option provides a great sense of adventure and more challenge to find each point. Total distance traveled will be around 4-4.5 miles.

A hard cut-off of 3:00 p.m. will be in place, with all participants needing to have returned to the starting point by then. Hot drinks will be waiting participants at the end until 3:00 p.m. We'll provide an intro with some tips about the parks and surrounding lands, course maps, and a compass to borrow (compass not necessary to complete course, but can be helpful to orient while out.)
