Plymouth County Conservation is constantly working on improving conservation opportunities throughout the county. We were very pleased with our last two projects both completed in the last 7 years.  One is River's Bend Wildlife Area, the other a new playground on the south side of Hillview Recreation Area.

River's Bend Wildlife Area, located about a mile and a half south of Akron, consists of a stocked fishing lake with a dock and boat ramp, 10 campsites with water and electric, a picnic shelter and a restroom.  There is also a dump station for the convenience of the campers!

The new playground at Hillview Park replaced a playground that was 35 years old!  It consists of traditional equipment such as swings and slides, but also has a willow tree tunnel, a boat sandbox, stepping "stumps" and is handicap accessible.

One other project we would like to mention was one brought to the conservation board by community members Kyle and Kevin Huggenberger.  They had the great idea to put in a 9 hole disc golf course at Hillview Park and went so far as to design said course and fund raise for it.  Thanks to the Huggenberger brothers, the Plymouth County Conservation Board and Foundation, as well as generous sponsors, that idea became a reality!

This brings us to our newest endeavor, The Hillview Recreation Area Improvement Project!

In 2018 Hillview Park acquired 305 acres directly adjacent to it.  One of the first things done was fencing the boundaries and putting up park signage.  Last year, 2019, we seeded rye grass as a cover crop, in the fall of 2020 it was seeded with native grasses.  In the spring of 2020 we did a prescribed burn on 55 acres as well as planted a 10 acre food plot.  A crossing from the original park to the new area has also been constructed. A certain portion of this area will be open to hunting in the fall.  Over time our plans include building hiking and riding trails, developing a fishing pond, opening more areas to hunting, expanding our disc golf course from 9 holes to 18, and possibly building an equine camping area.
