Prairie Chicken Festival


Event Summary

Load the car with pillows and sleepy kids and head to an early morning ritual none will forget, the 6th Annual Greater Prairie Chicken Festival! In the spring, a greater prairie chicken’s thoughts turn to love… and boy, does he let everybody know about it. The unique mating call of the male greater prairie chicken- known as “booming” and his strange accompanying dance draws crouds of people to view the spectacle. The Kellerton Grassland Bird Conservation Area, near Mount Ayr is the only place in Iowa where this amazing experience takes place. The WCCB is organizing a carpool to get to this event. We will leave the ANC at 5:00 a.m. The boom begins at sunrise and ends around 9:00 a.m. We will grab some breakfast on the way back. Preregistration is required to have a head count for carpooling!
